Senjogahara is a 400 hectare marshland at an elevation of 1400m which often drops below 20 degrees Celsius below the freezing point in the winter and is the coldest area on the island of Honshu. The name Senjogahara comes from the legend that this spacious swampland was the site of a battle between the giant centipede god of Mount Akagiyama and the giant snake god of Mount Nantaisan. Senjogahara is a famous tourist spot and provides a spectacular view of Mount Nantaisan and the other Nikko Mountains and the alpine plants, wild birds and snow covered landscape in the winter are amazing to behold.
